A kiss for a couple after an Intimate Lake Como Elopement at Villa Monastero

Intimate Lake Como Elopement at Villa Monastero

I thank you, silent stone on earth,
and gently lean to you below.
My life as plant I owe to you.

"The Washing of the Feet" - C. Morgenstern

An early morning Lake Como elopement at Villa Monastero, quiet vows, a symbolic lakeside ritual, and two days of intentional storytelling between Varenna and Bellagio.

A Morning Before the World Woke Up

Cat and Isaac traveled from the US to exchange vows in one of Italy’s most iconic landscapes, choosing the lake not only for its beauty, but for the quiet intimacy it offers at sunrise.

As a Lake Como wedding videographer, I often guide couples through the nuances of timing, privacy, and light that make these early morning ceremonies possible.

The day began quietly at Vista Palazzo in Como. Early light filtered through the windows as they prepared separately, knowing that within hours they would stand in one of the most iconic villas in Italy, completely alone.

Because Villa Monastero fills quickly with visitors later in the day, we set out early. The lake was still. The boat ride to Varenna became part of the story: wind in their hair, silence between them, anticipation building with every ripple of water.

Sometimes the journey to the ceremony is as meaningful as the ceremony itself.

With only their celebrant present, they exchanged vows overlooking the lake. No distractions. No audience. Just presence.

Villa Monastero offers something rare: refined architecture softened by botanical gardens and open water. In the quiet of the morning, it felt suspended in time.

After the vows, we wandered through the gardens slowly, allowing the rhythm of the place to guide us. No rush. No performance. Just space.

A Ritual on the Water

On the way back to Como, the couple included a deeply personal Christian ritual: washing each other’s feet at the edge of the lake.

It was symbolic. Tender. Grounded.

Barefoot by the water, with the Alps in the distance and October light reflecting on the surface, the gesture felt both ancient and immediate, an act of humility and devotion in one of the most cinematic landscapes in the world.

They opened champagne on the boat. Laughed. Sat quietly. Let it sink in.

A Second Chapter in Bellagio

The following day we continued with a creative session in the gardens of Villa Melzi near Bellagio. Different light. Different mood. Same intimacy.

Later, we ended the afternoon in the simplest way possible, sharing pizza in the center of Bellagio.

That’s something I value deeply about elopements like this. They’re not productions. They’re shared experiences. Over time, the connection between filmmaker and couple becomes something more than professional; it becomes human.

Planning an Elopement in Lake Como

Lake Como is undeniably cinematic, but its beauty comes with nuances that require thoughtful planning.

Villas such as Villa Monastero attract significant daytime visitors, which makes early morning ceremonies essential for privacy and atmosphere. The calm of the lake at sunrise offers something entirely different: softer light, quieter surroundings, and a sense of intimacy that would be impossible later in the day. If you’re still exploring venues around the lake, you may find inspiration in my curated guide to the best wedding venues in Lake Como.

Boat transfers are not simply logistical necessities here; they become part of the narrative. The movement across the water, the wind, the sound of the engine against stillness — these are moments that shape the emotional texture of a Lake Como elopement.

Seasonality also plays a subtle role. Early October light carries a gentler tone, with cooler air and a softness that enhances the cinematic quality of both portraits and motion. The pace slows naturally, and that slower rhythm allows space for meaningful gestures, like a symbolic ritual by the water’s edge.

For couples traveling from abroad, understanding timing, permits, privacy, and logistics is essential. If you’re at the beginning of your planning journey, you may also read my guide on how to elope in Italy.

If you are considering a celebration anywhere across the country, whether by the lake, in Tuscany, or along the Amalfi Coast, you can explore my broader approach as an Italy wedding videographer.

An intimate elopement in Lake Como is not about grandeur. It is about presence.

Cat and Isaac chose stillness, intention, and space to honor their commitment — and in doing so, created something timeless.
